The six-meal Sunday
Exploring the restaurant scene in Fruita, Colorado
The town of Fruita is synonymous with quirky vibes and outdoor adventure. But the word fruita comes from the Spanish and Catalan term for orchards, agriculture and, yes, fruit. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that while some people come here for singletrack trails, others show up for multi-course meals.
Fruita’s foodies have always been famous for their unique local hangouts. And in recent years the scene has welcomed chef-owned restaurants and revitalized local concepts that reflect the community’s evolving tastes.
Is it unlikely you’ll squeeze six meals into a single Sunday? Sure. But that shouldn’t stop you from dreaming!
1. Ease into your morning
You start the day with an oatmilk latte at Bestslope Coffee. The woody interior is full of locals in flannel and beanies, chatting about yesterday’s bike ride or this afternoon’s hike. And the brews are all freshly roasted and sustainably sourced.
2. Sunday brunchday
Basecamp Provisions’ main menu features smashburgers, comfort sides, and many craft beers on tap. But since it’s brunch, you can’t say no to the breakfast poutine. Fries heaped with cheese curds, sausage gravy and scrambled eggs… It seems like all you could ask for! And then you see the mimosa cart rolling your way.
3. One lunch, so many choices
Longtime local favorites like Hot Tomato Pizza continue to delight fans with dough that’s made by hand, every day. Besides classic pizza options, you could go for the pickletastic Delicious or the aptly named feta-and-garlic Stinky Deluxe.
4. Afternoon brews
The transformation of downtown continues with the Fruita Tavern, which used to be known as the Copper Club. The menu has an enticing array of street tacos. But you’re here to relax, so you order a small-batch brew like the hoppy 420 Barrel DIPA. And then you kick back on the patio to enjoy the sunshine.
5. Dinner destination
As the sun sets, you take a six-minute stroll through Circle Park, up to Josephine’s Italian Restaurant. This is Fruita’s newest must-taste destination. The hand-stretched pizzas are a local favorite, but the house-made pastas are truly world-class. Try the orecchiette, a traditional Puglia pasta perfect for holding sauces. It’s a dining experience that somehow feels elevated and casual at once. The tiramisu is calling your name, but instead you call for the check. You have one more decision to make.
6. A sweet finish (or two)!
You head for Fruita Gelato Company for your final treat, a Cowboy Creamer. These gelato shakes come in one-of-a-kind flavors like Rustler’s Peach Cobbler. It’s a perfect ending for today at least. But you still manage to stop at Mary’s Mountain Cookies to fill a sack full of Charlie Browns and Avalanches. The aroma is irresistible, but you resist devouring the whole bag on the way back to your bed.
After all, you want to make sure you have a taste of Fruita to take home.
