Life is a Highway

Welcome to Fruita, where scenic drives are an adventure through diverse landscapes and natural wonders. If you’re a nature enthusiast, a photography buff, or simply someone who enjoys the beauty of the great outdoors, Fruita’s scenic drives are a must-do on your travel itinerary.

Colorado State Highway 65

One of the most spectacular drives in the area is along State Highway 65, which winds its way over the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flattop mountain. As you ascend this natural marvel, be prepared to witness a mesmerizing transformation of ecosystems. The lower slopes have a desert-like environment typical of Fruita, with hardy vegetation and desert dwellers like lizards making their homes here. But as you climb higher, the landscape evolves into a subalpine paradise, where ancient trees and evergreens thrive, providing habitat for majestic wildlife like deer and black bears.

Rimrock Drive

If canyon views are more your style, Rimrock Drive through the Colorado National Monument promises an awe-inspiring journey. The red-hued canyons, dotted with pinyon-juniper woodlands and adorned with sagebrush and yucca, create a captivating scene that changes hues with the seasons. On this drive, you may spot one of the many lizard and toad species that live in the canyon, and you will see a large range of birds flying overhead. In fall, the drive becomes a canvas painted with the vibrant colors of changing leaves, making it a photographer’s dream.

This is the perfect place to stop for a quick picnic along the road. Continuing along the highway, you’ll encounter Dinosaur Hill, a prehistoric treasure trove that offers a glimpse into the ancient past. You will also pass Monument Canyon Trailhead, which leads into the Colorado National Monument.

18 Road

Venture into the North Fruita Desert via 18 Road, where the magic of nature unfolds in all its glory. This scenic route will leave you spellbound! The trail winds through a picturesque terrain, offering glimpses of the Book Cliffs to the north and the silhouette of Mount Garfield to the southeast. In the distance, you can spot the San Juan Mountain Range as well. There are many avian species along this path, so be sure to roll your windows down to hear the songs of the birds.
