View of the Colorado National Monument in Fruita, CO

Fruita ‘Off the Beaten Path’

Here in Fruita, we’re lucky to be home to some of the best hiking and biking trails in the region. And while we hope everyone has an opportunity to experience a sunrise over Colorado National Monument, feel the thrill of dropping down at BLM’s Horsethief Bench, or zoom over Pumps, Bumps and Rollers at 18 Road, just know that those hot-spots are only scratching the surface of what Fruita has to offer.

If you’re a local looking for a way to explore the unknown treasures of the places you love, we have a few in mind!

MCINNIS NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA

RATTLESNAKE CANYON

Rattlesnake Canyon, managed by BLM, has an intimidating name but is a well-worth-it trek to view majestic natural arches. The trailhead is only a 13-minute drive from downtown, and you’ll be led to the second-highest concentration of natural arches in the U.S. (second only to Arches National Park)!

FLUME CANYON

Looking for a family-friendly option? Accessed from the same trailhead as Rattlesnake Arches, BLM’s Flume Canyon Trail offers a shorter, more gradual trail surrounded by red rocks and wildflowers. You can bring the family dog as well, as long as they stay on their leash!

COLORADO RIVER & SURROUNDING TRAILS

COLORADO RIVERFRONT TRAIL: MONUMENT VIEW SECTION

Stir crazy and need a trail close to home? Take in views of Colorado National Monument, and the Colorado River all while getting your miles in! Rated as an intermediate paved path, the Colorado Riverfront Trail: Monument Section is a great way to soak up the simple joys of living in a biking mecca.

COLORADO RIVER: RUBY AND HORSETHIEF CANYON

Simply put, lakes and reservoirs are more difficult to spread out on. That’s why you should explore the Colorado River! Cool off and enjoy a float through BLM’s Ruby and Horsethief Canyon via kayak, SUP or raft. Just a reminder to keep a six-foot distance from other parties, and limit your group to less than 10 people.

COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT

BLACK RIDGE TRAIL

Hiking and road biking in Colorado National Monument is a great way to get away from every-day stress and soak up a beautiful view. To take the path less traveled, we recommend BLM’s Black Ridge Trail, the highest trail in the monument. This trail, as with any trail in the monument, does not allow dogs or mountain biking. However, you can explore the monument by bike on the paved road winding through it.

We know that we wouldn’t be the destination we are today without our awesome locals. So locals, take a day to enjoy some new adventure spots in your own backyard.
